Why the Name?

Why the name Two Redwoods? Well, first I have to say that I love trees, I adore California, and there isn’t a more iconic California tree than a redwood. Besides their beauty, redwoods are symbols of strength, longevity, high aspirations, and when you learn about how they grow, even interdependence and community.

I’m also a passionate gardener, and I pay a lot of attention to the trees and other plants that surround me. I mean, is there anything more quintessentially “NorCal” than coast redwoods and palm trees together in a home landscape? I’ve got them in my backyard, and they’re fantastic together. Right by the pool. Nice.

So, there’s the root of the name (if you’ll pardon the pun)… I have two redwoods in my backyard. They tower over the house, at something like 80 feet tall. They are magnificent and majestic. They’re inspiring. And they’re also right by my office. You see, I work in a beautiful little office that I crafted with my own hands, tiny-house-style, in my backyard.

My tiny office and the two redwoods

I’ve found over my career that when you work in ideas and words for so many hours a day, you need something physical, some tangible creation, to balance out your life. I get that from gardening, and I also get it from building things. Building my office was a fun project, complete with reclaimed windows from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, shiplap walls, a pine ceiling, a hand-crank sit-stand desk from Ikea, and all the things I need to have a focused, peaceful work environment. All at the feet of two giant coast redwoods. It’s a great place to work. And the commute can’t be beat!  🙂
